PRIVACY POLICY

1. Introduction

Zephr ("the App") is a macOS menu bar application for AI-powered text rewriting, developed by Derek Lei ("we," "us," or "our"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information when you use Zephr.

We are committed to transparency and to minimising the data we collect. We do not require you to create an account or provide personal information to use the free tier of the App.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Selected Text

When you invoke a rewrite, Zephr reads the text you have selected on screen using the macOS Accessibility API. This text is sent to the AI provider you have configured in order to generate a rewritten version. We do not store, log, or retain the content of your selected text on our servers.

2.2 Device Identifier

Zephr generates an anonymous device identifier (deviceId) that is stored locally on your Mac. This identifier is used solely to manage your subscription status and track usage limits. It is not linked to your name, email address, or any other personally identifiable information.

2.3 Local Settings

Your preferences—including your selected AI provider, API keys, keyboard shortcut configuration, and rewrite rules—are stored locally on your device via macOS UserDefaults. We do not have access to these settings.

2.4 Subscription Information

If you subscribe to Zephr Pro, payment is processed entirely by Stripe. We do not collect or store your payment card details. Stripe may collect information in accordance with its own Privacy Policy.

3. How Your Text Is Processed

Zephr supports multiple AI providers. How your text is handled depends on which provider you use:

  • Built-in Zephr model: Your selected text is sent through our secure API proxy (zephr-api.vercel.app) to the underlying AI model. We do not log or retain the content of these requests.
  • API providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, OpenRouter): Your text is sent directly from the App to the respective provider’s API using your own API key. We never see or handle this traffic.
  • CLI tools (Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI): Processing occurs locally on your device via the installed CLI tool. No data leaves your machine through Zephr.
  • Local models (Ollama, LM Studio, LiteLLM): Processing occurs entirely on your device. No data leaves your machine.

4. Analytics and Tracking

Zephr does not include any third-party analytics, tracking, or advertising SDKs. We do not track your browsing activity, app usage patterns, or behaviour within the App beyond what is strictly necessary for subscription management.

5. Permissions

Zephr requires the macOS Accessibility permission to read text that you have selected on screen. This permission is used exclusively to capture your selection for rewriting. The App does not read or monitor any content beyond the text you explicitly select and submit for rewriting.

6. Data Security

All communication between the App and our API proxy is encrypted using HTTPS/TLS. API keys and local settings are stored in your macOS UserDefaults and are accessible only to the App on your device.

7. Data Retention

We do not retain your selected text or rewritten content on our servers. Your device identifier is retained only for the duration of your use of the App and any active subscription. All local data is removed when you uninstall the App.

8. Third-Party Services

When you choose to use a third-party AI provider, your text is subject to that provider’s privacy policy and terms of service. We encourage you to review the privacy practices of any third-party provider you configure within the App.

9. Children’s Privacy

Zephr is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated effective date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
